Short and long text questions

Before getting started

Before you create a text question, it might be helpful to understand the general outline of an exam question. We explain that in the Creating a question article.

This article is about the second step of creating a question: setting up the answer section.

Short text questions

Short text questions are questions where the answer is a short text, such as a word or a short phrase. Students can type their answer in a text box.

  1. From the Designer page, click on an existing question or click on the Add new question button.

  2. Scroll down to the answer section. From the Answer type dropdown, select Short text answer.

  3. Under the correct answers section, type in possible correct answers. This way, questions can be graded automatically.

  4. Click on the Save changes button to save the question.

Answer options

  • Check capitalization: If enabled, the answer will be case sensitive. For example, if the correct answer is Hello, then hello will be considered incorrect.

  • Ignore spaces and punctuation: If enabled, the answer will be considered correct even if the student's answer has extra spaces or punctuation. For example, if the correct answer is Hello, then Hello! will be considered correct.

  • Contains equation: If enabled, the answer text will be scanned for equations by the AI.

Long text questions

Long text questions are questions where the answer is a long text, such as a paragraph or an essay. Students can type their answer in a text box.

  1. From the Designer page, click on an existing question or click on the Add new question button.

  2. Scroll down to the answer section. From the Answer type dropdown, select Long text answer.

  3. Click on the Save changes button to save the question.
